Phosphoric Acid Tanks

Phosphoric acid tanks are used to store this colourless, odourless mineral acid with an acidic taste and somewhat viscous consistency.  Phosphoric acid is used in a wide variety of products and industries. Despite its popularity, this chemical can pose some potentially significant health hazards and should be handled with caution. Phosphoric Acid is also known as orthophosphoric acid and H3PO4, is commonly used in agriculture for crop performance chemicals like fertilizer, the cleaning industry for detergents and soaps, and the food industry as food and beverage additives.  Solution strengths often range up to 85% H3PO4

Common Uses of Phosphoric Acid;

Phosphoric acid is used in several industries and can be found in:

  • Food additives (to acidify foods, or as a leavening agent)
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Water treatment
  • Toothpaste
  • Rust removal
  • Etching solutions in dentistry
  • Teeth whiteners
  • Cleaning products

Uses of Phosphoric Acid in Water Treatment

Phosphates have many uses in the treatment of potable drinking water.  Phosphoric Acid is used to prevent the effects of groundwater exposure to iron and manganese. When iron is exposed to air, it oxidised and discolour the water creating rust stains.

Phosphoric Acid Storage Challenges and Solutions

Phosphoric acid is delivered at elevated temperatures to keep the chemicals from separating and can cause expansion and contraction stress on the storage tank due to temperature variations. A robust, polypropylene storage tank is required to handle this tank stress.  Phosphoric acid has a tendency to separate and sludge can build up at the bottom of the storage tank, Enduramaxx’s full drain cone tanks provide full tank drainage, and one-piece construction providing the benefit of easy and safe tank cleaning.

Phosphoric acid a hazardous substance that must be handled and stored properly as it is highly corrosive and can irritate and burn the skin. Breathing the chemical can irritate the nose and throat.  While phosphoric acid offers a versatile, cost-effective solution to drinking water treatment, it does present storage challenges.  These bunded phosphoric acid Storage Tanks are offered with chemical tank options including liquid level sensor assemblies and fill pipes, fittings and modifications to suit your application.  This includes inlets, outlets, PN16 and ANSI flanges, welded sockets and as well as fume proof lids and vents.
